What is Microspine Surgery?
Endoscopic spinal surgery relates to techniques that involve endoscopes. endoscopes are magnification devices that are actually inserted into the body. This is in contrast to microscopes which can be within the body (endoscopes) or outside of the body (conventional microscope). Thus the term endoscopic is more specific. A lot of people perform microspine surgery such as discectomy surgery. This is gradually becoming the standard of care. Fewer people perform complicated laminotomy or foraminotomy work in which bone is removed as well as disc material. The reason for this is simple, it is complicated surgery and unless you perform it on a regular basis it is hard to do. It is like flying an airplane once a month. If you ask any pilot, you need to fly regularly to be proficient and surgery is just the same. Many Microspine surgeries utilize lasers. Lasers are usually utilized to remove soft tissues since they heat the bone too excessively to utilize them around areas where the bones and nerves are close in proximity. By definition, Microspine surgery is minimally invasive surgery and thus the incisions are less than one inch. Too often the surgery says the incision will be an inch and it is three. That just means three times the healing process. So ask your surgeon if he truly performs microspine type surgeries. There is nothing wrong with asking and he shouldn't be insulted. Spine surgery is complex and its your body. Other terms such as laser spine surgery or "laserscopic" surgery is occasionally used to describe microspine surgery but microspine surgery better describes the process. There are many excellent doctors out there but there are also bad ones. Make sure he is board certified and that he is a medical doctor (M.D.). This tells you that he did well enough to have gotten into medical school and that he was smart enough to pass his boards. There are a lot of different doctors out there but the M.D. is the best by far. Check with prior patients and even the state if possible. The best doctors aren't ashamed of their records but also realize that a lost lawsuit or two is meaningless usually (Bad doctors often have multiple losses).
